8 Wired Saison Sauvin

Your daily pint for Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 is: 8 WIRED SAISON SAUVIN

What it is: A saison brewed with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops.

What it tastes like: Most traditional saisons feature spicy, grassy Old World hops, but 8 Wired (a brewery out of New Zealand) added a little local flavor by using the Nelson Sauvin variety. The result makes for a punchier, brighter saison: Traditional white pepper, hay and lemon notes adopt wonderful grapefruit and peach hop flavors. Spritzy carbonation lends a classic dry finish.

What’s going on with New Zealand? Beer writer Stephen Beaumont recently tackled that question in our March/April issue this year. Give the article a read, and then go check out the options at your local beer store.

“Nelson” fun fact of the day: Remember the band Nelson? It was formed by twin brothers Matthew and Gunnar Nelson. They were the sons of Ricky Nelson, who had hits in the late ’50s and early ’60s, like “Travelin’ Man” and “Hello Mary Lou.” And, he was the son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson of 1950’s TV “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” fame. That’s the full Nelson.
