The Fishtown Beer Runners just keep getting bigger and bigger.

The Philadelphia group has been called “the coolest running club in America,” they’ve been featured in the New York Times, and now they’re getting their own documentary.

Originally, the documentary was only going to be a short promo piece. Then filmmaker Justin Wirtalla realized there was more to tell.

“You shared personal stories with him about the impact FBR and running has had on your lives,” founder David April wrote in an email to club members.

According to April, the documentary is meant to inspire people to “enjoy getting active and healthy (like running to a bar and drinking a frosty pint). To take life’s hard lessons and turn them into positive experiences. To push yourself to achieve the goals that seem insurmountable. To contribute to humanity, and be part of something bigger than yourself.”

Half the film has been shot in Philadelphia, and the second half will document the group meeting the famous “Professor,” aka the researcher the group toasts after every run. This is in reference to a University of Granada study that found that beer is a better recovery drink than water after exercise.

You can see the trailer and contribute to a Kickstarter campaign here.

This is a unique experience; starting the run in a changing (for the better) neighborhood, getting some good miles in, then finishing at a hip bar with a very refreshing beer! And everyone in the group has a story to tell. And they are ALL good stories. It’s always an interesting time when running with the Fishtown Beer Runners. “To the Professor”!!
