This year’s Great American Beer Festival has come and gone, and thousands of livers are breathing a sigh of relief. Sunday was a painful day of travel, but the extreme brews I sipped throughout the festival (see here and here) were all I could think about. I can’t emphasize enough the wealth of exceptional traditional styles being crafted Stateside, but the skyrocketing number of non-conforming beers is mind-blowing, and extremely exciting.
On Monday, I usually spotlight a new beer, or something unique that sticks out from the crowd. But, after a weekend of thoroughly enjoying rare sours, beer crafted out of pigs heads and many more unusually delicious pours, the comfort of my local SanTan Brewing’s Devil’s Ale is what I crave. This 96-point pale ale’s toasted malts prop up an array of hop flavors—piney, citrusy and flowery all at once—and the beer finishes with a refreshingly crisp snap. It’s the perfect recovery beer—and style—for when you’ve ventured far down the rabbit hole, and what I’m planning to crack open tonight as Hank Williams, Jr., leads us into another episode of Monday Night Football. Its high-score also makes it the perfect beer for toasting the Beer Runner’s high-level accomplishment of 365 days of beer and running.
What’s your favorite recovery beer or style?
