“The bar that banned ‘Danny Boy’” is at it again. Foley’s NY Bar & Restaurant in Manhattan has dropped the mighty ban hammer on all Boston Beer products during this Sunday’s Giants vs. Patriots Super Bowl.
“In support of Big Blue, we will be banning the sale of Sam Adams and anything Boston-related during the game,” Foley’s owner Shaun Clancy told the YES Network. “We are encouraging them instead to order Brooklyn Ale, which is brewed here in New York.”
Bold move, Clancy. So, if you’re looking to tip back a few Boston Lagers in Manhattan this Sunday, you may want to avoid Foley’s. No worries, there are plenty of beer-soaked bars in the city.
UPDATE: Word just came in from Boston Beer’s spokesperson Michelle Diamandis, who relayed founder Jim Koch’s thoughts on the banning:
“We are OK being taken off draft for a couple of hours if the hometown fans want to show their team spirit on Sunday. I know Foley’s, and it’s a great bar. I hope they remember that no matter where you’re watching the game or who wins, if it weren’t for the original New England patriot, Samuel Adams and his cohorts, we might be watching Cricket and drinking tea instead of watching the Super Bowl.”
Touché, Mr. Koch.
Clancy isn’t the only one taking beer and football seriously. U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) have raised the Congressional stakes. If the Giants win, Shaheen will buy the Senate a round from rival New York breweries, including beer from Brooklyn, Brown’s, Blue Point, Saranac, Captain Lawrence and Ithaca. If the Patriots prevail, Schumer’s stuck buying a round of Smuttynose. In other words, free beer for the other 98 members of the Senate, regardless of which team wins the Lombardi. Great time to revisit budget talks, no?
So what beer are you banning, betting or buying this Super Bowl Sunday?
And, for those who couldn’t care less about football, I might suggest pairing a few pints of Flying Dog with an afternoon of the “Puppy Bowl” on Animal Planet. Don’t forget the wings.
