Fresh off its 2009 GABF silver medal, Redhook’s barleywine is pure liquid pleasure. Fairly pale, this orange brew flashes gold highlights and dons a healthy crown. Aromas are complex, with lightly toasted malt, honey sweet sugars, and an ultra-smooth alcohol tinge melding for a harmonious bouquet. Each whiff gets better as you allow this beer to warm. The complexity carries seamlessly from nose to tongue: Treblehook starts big and meaty, with a load of caramel, ripe fig, and raisin flavors, while hops play a supporting role, holding enough ground to balance the sweetness. The flavors are big but don’t lean into the tongue, and actually sum up wonderfully dry.
