This story doesn’t exactly fit the norm of what I usually write about. Then again, there’s nothing normal about this story.
Meet Peggy, a 3-legged champion beer running alpine goat.
“She has always had a joy for running,” Peggy’s owner (and rescuer) Colin Presby told a news station that did a feature on the underdog, I mean, undergoat.
Presby took Peggy in and was forced to amputate her leg after a dog attacked her when she was young. But since then she has bounced back and won’t stop running.
“Peggy is a born runner,” says her Facebook page. “Most of her experience to date has been on turf, but frequent trips to the pet store have given her some good training on asphalt.
She also has a taste for Randy Mosher’s Radical Brewing.
“She devoured it! Seriously, she ripped the cover off and ate the first several pages of Colin’s autographed copy!”
And if that wasn’t inspirational enough, Peggy started running in races against other goats. Goats who have four legs. And she held her own.
As a four-month-old in 2010, Peggy competed in the Sly Fox Brewery Bock Fest Goat Race in Phoenixville, PA. Unfortunately, she missed the finals due to stage fright, according to her Facebook page. But in 2011 she came back in Rocky mode with the backing of many supporters, including Weyerbacher Brewing.
That year, Peggy defeated 51 other competitors and two-time champion Dax the goat in Sly Fox Goat Race. You can see the incredible feat here. Yes, those are chants of Peg-gy! Peg-gy! Peg-gy!
This year, she came back to win the title for the second year in a row.
Congratulations, Peggy. You’re the most inspirational famous beer-racing goat I’d ever hope to meet.
Peg-gy! Peg-gy! Peg-gy!
