Weekend beer and racing report

Some people don’t believe in drinking beer the night before a big race. I will never understand those people.

Carbo loading is important.

I started this weekend by going out to the Rumpus Room to celebrate six amazing years with my wife Jess, aka

The Beer Mama. I had a half marathon the next morning. But not having beer wasn’t an option, just like the last 747 days of my beer and running streak.

My wife and I shared a Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro, a Sweet Mullets Steinbeer and a Lakefront Smoked Pumpkin. This is the first time I’ve seen any of those beers on tap in Wisconsin, and I’d recommend all of them. The Rumpus Room beer menu is overwhelming, and the perfect place to calm your pre-race nerves.

I was supposed to run the full marathon with my Twitter buddy Jay at the Des Plaines River Trail Race near Libertyville, Ill. The day before I got a message from Jay asking if we could switch to the half. I was more than OK with that. My training has been more in line with a half marathon, except a slow 24.5 mile training run two weeks ago.

The race course was beautiful, especially this time of year, located on a forest preserve with beautiful views of rivers, ponds and bridges while on a crushed gravel trail. This was my fourth half marathon in two months, and it was certainly the most scenic course.

I ended up third place overall with a 1:25:30. I was on pace to break the PR I set a month ago at the Brewers Mini, until I started cramping with one mile to go. I had to settle with a trail marathon PR of more than three minutes.

After the race, my wife and I stopped at Three Cellars, our favorite craft beer store, to pick up a few more anniversary beers. I was overjoyed to see that Lagunitas has brought back their Brown Shugga‘. We picked up a six pack along with a special bottle of Rogue’s Double Chocolate Stout.

Carbohydrate replenishment is just as important.
