Performance enhancing beer

Not-so-secret ingredient: Viagra

You’re looking at one of the world’s only bottles of performance enhancing beer.

Scotland’s Brew Dog Brewery created a limited edition 1,000 bottles of Royal Virility Performance, a beer specially made for the upcoming royal wedding.

The beer contains chocolate, Horny Goat Weed and not-so-secret ingredient Viagra — along with “a healthy dose of sarcasm.”

So while the 7.5% ABV India Pale Ale is clearly made as a novelty, could it actually improve performance? And not just that performance.

Along with becoming world famous as an anti-erectile disfunction drug and marketed as Viagra, the medication Sildenafil is used to improve the ability to exercise in people with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

In fact, the effect of the drug is not necessarily sexual at all.

“It’s a blood-flow drug,” states a Slate article. “By dilating vessels and increasing oxygenation, it can improve athletic performance. Two studies have already verified this effect in cycling and mountaineering.”

So there you have it. Drink this beer, and you can get it on.

And by it, of course, I mean a healthy, active lifestyle.
