Meet Shipyard Brewing's Alan Pugsley

Alan Pugsley, quite literally, has been around the world for the sake of beer. His first job was with the legendary Peter Austin at the equally legendary Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England. There, Pugsley learned not just how to brew, but how to build a brewery from the ground up, and he did so throughout the world as Austin's assistant, and later as his own boss.

Pugsley has a soft spot for English-style ales. After all, he was born in England and reminisces about the time when "you enjoyed a couple pints of beer that were lower in alcohol, and [the pub] was the social center of the universe."

At Shipyard, Pugsley exercises his love for English ales with his list of recipes, including Export Ale (the mainstay), India Pale Ale, Bluefin Stout and Shipyard Brown. But knowledge and skill aren't the only tools in his box; he also has the original Ringwood yeast strain, which dates back more than 150 years.

"We think it produces clean, easy-drinking, well-balanced beers with English character," he says. "That's been our success really: producing quality pale ales and India pale ales and extra special bitters. It can brew a very good light beer to a very strong barleywine." According to the numbers, consumers agree.
