Redhead Red Ale by Dunedin Brewery (Dunedin)
Every small town has a crazy redhead, but Dunedin is the only one with a beer to honor its flame-tressed local celebrity. Roasts of caramel, wisps of chocolate malt, and Willamette and East Kent Golding hops don’t combine for hellfire in a bottle as the name may suggest, but also make for a beautiful red that’s nutty, not too bitter, and perfectly sweet. Yes, we’re talking about the beer.
Saison Athene by St. Somewhere Brewing Co. (Tarpon Springs)
Concocted with chamomile, black pepper, and rosemary grown literally in the brewer’s backyard, this Belgian-style saison pours like a dusky golden cascade before unleashing a textured aroma of champagne, ginger, and mixed citrus. Lightly laced and pleasingly spiced, a dash of wild yeast just before bottling ensures the flavors mature over the years, like a fine wine.
Moosekiller Barley-Wine Style Ale by Tampa Bay Brewing Co. (Tampa)
Beware: it’s a product guarantee that this barlewine-style ale is strong enough to fell a moose -- that is, providing said animal can be persuaded to give it a try. But then, why should a moose refuse nectar of such deep mahogany and imbued with the richness of American Pale Malt? Oh right, the two pounds of Glacier hops per barrel. Steer clear, antlered ones.
Midnight Pass Porter by Sarasota Brewing Co. (Sarasota)
Black like a moonless Florida night, this robust porter requires a sundry sextet of potent malts to simulate the devilish decadence of espresso spiked with chocolate liquor. Full-bodied, but velvet on the palate, the bitterness of the hops fades away to finish like a waft of wintry smoke.
