A wealth of new, beery, downloadable iPhone applications are bubbling over at the iTunes store. Here are some of our favorites:
For the Connoisseurs
BeerPad: Create tasting notes for the beers you love. With this app ($3), you can input everything from brewery information to mouthfeel and aroma on an easy-to-scroll page. You can also rate the beer with a five-star system and attach your iPhone photos of the label for quick reference.
iBeers Lite: Search a database of more than 2,700 beers right from your palm. iBeers Lite ($1) provides brewery information, bottle sizes, beer styles and countries of origin so you always know what you’re ordering. With more than 2,300 photos and a “favorites” bank, this is a must-download.
BJCP Styles: Just as the name suggests, you can have the entire BJCP style guide right in your phone. This app (free) is perfect for the casual drinker, or a lifesaver for any beer judge with temporary amnesia.
For the Jokesters
iBeer: Simulate drinking beer from a pint glass with iBeer ($3), an app that’s good for at least one laugh. Tip this virtual pint glass and watch the beer foam and pour out of sight with all the appropriate sound effects, including a belch when the glass is empty.
pour 1 out: 40cozy.com’s pour 1 out (free) is a virtual 40-ounce that let’s you tip the bottle in memory of those left behind. You can also search the nearest liquor store if you want the real thing.
For the Practical
BeerCounter: Not meant to be an accurate reading of your soberness, BeerCounter (free) is a simple app that keeps track of how many beers you’ve consumed, when you last ordered a drink, and the accumulated price you spent on an evening’s booze.
iSpend: With iSpend ($11) you can keep track of your finances by recording daily expenses like gas, food, and, of course, beer. For the business-savvy, log expense reports, customize categories and export to Google Spreadsheet. Can’t expense your $100 bar tab because you lost the receipt? No worries, iSpend stores photos of receipts taken on your phone.
For the Barflies
Pocket Cocktails: Search cocktails by name or ingredient with Pocket Cocktail ($5). This program provides detailed recipes and instructions, photos of the drinks, and a “Random!” shaker mode for those who can’t decide what they want.
Are You Smarter Than A Bartender?: This app ($2) may be just a quiz game (“What is the flavor of Triple Sec?”), but you’re bound to learn something along the way. The multi-player function allows you to challenge your friends, and if you’re prepared to give a nice tip, you can even hassle the bartender into playing, too.
