We’ve been bogged down with holiday beers (oh, what rough lives we lead!) but finally got the courage to pop open this: The Most Interesting Jam, developed by none other than Dos Equis‘ Most Interesting Man in the World (with the help of his Facebook fans). Would-be jam makers doled out nearly 3,000 ingredient suggestions, and the result is an apple-based jam of Thai herbs, Cuban oregano, real (dead) cockroaches and, of course, gold. We were quite honored to get a jar of the good stuff; one jar went for more than $1,000 on eBay (naturally, the Man donated his profit to charity).

Today, we armed ourselves with toast, untied the burlap and popped the cap. The jam was fruity, almost apricotlike; that’s the work of all those apples and sugar. There was a faint but sturdy herbal note, and a definite crunch as the grasshoppers met our teeth. It wasn’t the wildest or best or worst jam we’ve ever tasted. But most interesting? You bet.
