Abbey Grand Cru stands out among its murky brown brethren with a brilliantly clear copper hue. Its aroma, though, bears the familiar interplay of bubblegum, caramel and clove. On the tongue, clove emerges first and meets spicy alcohol mid-sip. Dark fruit sweetness permeates a bready malt foundation, and tempers the growing spice on the back of the tongue. Although Grand Cru would benefit from more of the style’s toasted bread crust flavors, the dance of spice and fruit, along with a touch of fresh tobacco just before the finish, makes this beer worth savoring. |
