A hushed bouquet rises from this amber beer’s tan head; gentle grains and malt sugar drift dreamily to the nose. Husky, grainy flavors envelop the tongue while a thin stream of caramel trickles beneath. The rest of the swallow is modest: Malt hints are barely whispers and not terribly sweet, while hop flavors appear only as traces of floral notes. Hops do, however, contribute a quick bite near the end, which helps balance the grain. With a clean, dry finish, Spaten’s dunkel is extraordinarily quaffable; each sip leaves little trace behind.
