Ruddy amber coloring and a frothy off-white head lend Sculler’s a sturdy appearance. That heartiness reflects in the robust woody and citrusy aroma, teeming with caramelized malt and a firm alcohol wallop. The tastes are untidy, aggressive, and playful; the deep caramel sweetness comes on strong at first, just ahead of big, sticky grapefruit and pine hop flavors and a biting bitterness. Sculler’s body is full of bravado, big and muscular with a sharp alcohol heat that is slightly off-putting. All told, however, the beer is powerful and satisfies those seeking a hop-forward brew.
