Northern English Brown Ale Reviews

Hoppier and dryer than Southern-style options, Northern browns are popular pints both in the U.K. and Stateside—perhaps the most famous example of the style is Newcastle’s version. Aromas are light and sweet with a nutty quality rather than a caramel one; a fresh hop scent and occasionally some very light fruit esters add intrigue. A medium-bodied and moderately carbonated swallow presents gentle yet noticeable malt sweetness with a toasty or toffee character, as well as medium bitterness that lends a dry finish. Generally quite balanced, Northern browns range from 4.2% to 5.4% ABV.

Pair: Taffy apples, with their bitter Granny Smith centers and nutty exteriors, make an exact matches for Northern browns’ nutty malt nuances and slight bitterness.
