What it is: A 9.5%-ABV, 102-IBU German imperial IPA
What it tastes like: This brew was made with all-German malts and hops. That essentially makes it an imperial German IPA, a style that doesn’t actually “exist.” Just imagine all your favorite German hop flavors on steroids. There’s an impressive amount of hop spiciness, backed by fruits like lemon, citrus zest and mango, as well as resinous grass and bright floral notes. It’s really impressive. It’s also incredibly drinkable, so watch out for that ABV.
How do you just create a new style? There’s no IPA tradition in Germany. Arguably, had IPAs caught on in Germany, they would have been brewed with German ingredients (like German hops). Stone basically did just that. They took the basic formula for an imperial IPA, and used German ingredients. The result is an imperial German IPA.
How do you pronounce the name? We’re still trying to figure that out.
