This rye-based red ale’s quiet earthy hop and light rye spice aroma doesn’t quite prepare the senses for the beer’s rich malt flavor. Bold biscuit notes splash down first, then mix with chocolate and caramel to coat the tongue with malt. Grassy hops and peppery rye sharply contrast the sweeter flavors, while firm bitterness earnestly attempts to lift all the malt off the tongue. In the end, the malts overpower, layering caramel and biscuit notes on the tongue after each swallow.
