For those of you unfamiliar with the exact lolcation of Utena, Lithuania in the world (or, for that matter, Lithuania itself), it's roughly 500 miles due west of Moscow. As you can imagine, the brewers there know a thing or two about crafting a beer that'll keep you warm in freezing temperatures. This beer starts out attractively, with good lacing from the head and a clear, reddish brown color. Utenos' aroma is slightly burnt, but the sweetness that comes through in the nose and the flavor washes out those notes quickly. The alcohol isn't as high in this brew as in some Baltic porters, and the malt profile is very intricate with notes of coffee to accompany the hearty roasted character. There is also a minimal anise aroma and taste, which adds considerably to the beer's complexity.
