The aroma of this patriotic ale is multilayered: bright tangerine at the upper reaches; caramel and toffee further down; twigs and husky corn below that. Woody, forest floor qualities emerge with a sip, as mossy, barklike hops meet toffee and candied tangerine. Sweet up front, the flavor dries out nicely toward the finish, and a clear-eyed toastiness almost pushes the beer into brown ale territory, adding to its depth and complexity.
