Pouring golden orange, Piraat’s rocky, white head sticks on the glass for quite some time. Its sugary-sweet bouquet is sprinkled with the yeast’s peppery spice and a touch of bright lemon. However, the swallow’s flavors are a bit shy: Table sugar and pilsner malt sweetness lay the foundation for grassy hop notes and modest bitterness that should stand taller. Hefty alcohol washes away the nuances; it just can’t hide as well as it should in the flavor. The high alcohol heat doesn’t detract from this full-bodied, highly carbonated brew’s drinkability. It sums up nicely, dry with a lingering bitterness.
