Avery puts the “pale” back into IPA: From the glass, this brew almost looks like your average light lager; within nose’s reach, it’s quickly evident the beer’s anything but. Intense, grassy, citrusy, and piney hop aromas surge in the bouquet, leaving little room for any malt aromas. The tongue follows suit with an onslaught of hops: Orange, grapefruit, grassy, and piney hop flavors play through the entire swallow, accompanied by an almost dominating bitterness. Alcohol warms in the throat, winking at an imperial style. It’s certainly crisp, lively and not for the faint of heart -- perhaps the perfect session beer for the hardcore hop-head.
