Boulevard’s cedar-aged doppelbock is an indisputably gorgeous beer to look at: It pours a golden-orange hue with exceptional clarity, topped by a massive off-white head. While a bit of alcohol pricks the nose, dark figlike fruits -- common in doppelbocks -- and a peppery, spicy character blend effortlessly with the delicate cedar notes. This big-bodied beer covers the palate with intense toffee and caramel sweetness that’s just a bit burnt around the edges, paired with an aggressive wallop of hop bitterness. Dark cherry flavors anchor the back, with a touch of cedar poking out into the long-lasting finish. While it’s not an extremely complex doppelbock, the cedar adds a complementary flavor that’s both enjoyable and elevating.
