The old wash-your-hair-in-a-can-of-lager trick? Good for your strands, bad for your beer fridge. Three female DRAFT staffers washed their manes with beer shampoos for a week, and got locks that feel surprisingly strong and smell delightfully un-beery.

Lush Cynthia Sylvia Stout | $20 for 8.4 oz.

“In my palm, it actually looks like beer, but in my hair, it gets rid of grease without making it too dry. My standard ponytail now gives off the best lemon-Cognac scent—no more of the fruity stuff for me!” –Jessica Daynor, managing editor

Duffy’s Brew Original Beer Shampoo | $15.99 for 8 oz.

“The smell is amazing, like sweet almond and cherry with a touch of oatmeal. When put to the test, it foamed more like a soft mousse than a full-on lather, but it definitely worked: It even got the chlorine (and chlorine smell) out of my hair after a swim.” –Erika Rietz, editor-in-chief

BRÖÖ Citrus Pale Ale Shampoo | $14.79 for 10 oz.

“The constant lather felt extra-clean, and the sweet citrus smell was invigorating. My hair’s silky, stronger and frizz-free.” –Lindsay Needham, photo editor
