Brewers, if you plan on winning a GABF medal this weekend, listen up: Since the dawn of the beer competition at GABF, Charlie Papazian (that’s him above, top row, third from left) has stood center stage and congratulated the winners as they received their medals. This presented a Charlie-Papazian-only problem: As the fest grew, he’d shake hundreds of hands, and the winners, in their excitement, would crush his fingers in overzealous vice-grips. One year, he wore a bandage on his hand, with hopes they’d get the hint (go easy). Eventually, popular culture brought Charlie a solution: The fist bump. So winners, knuckles up.
