Two can’t-miss beer series of 2012

CATEGORIES: Beer Editor

In case you missed it, I’ve been somewhat fascinated by specialty beer series recently. Last year was phenomenal for brewer side-projects—we saw everything from beers inspired by the exits of the New Jersey Turnpike to beers fermented with backyard fruit—and 2012 is off to a promising start. Don’t miss out on two new specialty beer series this year, from San Francisco’s Anchor and Seattle’s Elysian.

Anchor’s Zymaster Series is a nod to the past, beginning with No. 1 California Lager, which is an attempt to recreate the first California-style lager brewed back in the 1870s. Check out the video above for a pretty interesting history lesson by Anchor’s Dave Burkhart.

Elysian’s 12 Beers of the Apocalypse is more of a nod to the future—or at least, what little future we have if you buy the Mayan end of world prophecy. On the 21st of each month, Elysian releases a new beer. Its next release is Fallout, a green cardamom pale ale, and it debuts tomorrow at the brewery’s Elysian Fields location in Seattle.

Which specialty beer series have captured your imagination—and taste buds—so far this year?

Well I have been saving my Stone Vertical Series. Though this year I got to try Peak Organic’s Local Series. My favorite one so far is VT. While the series is only four deep, all four (VT, MA, ME, NY) have been great.
